2022 Fantasy Outlook
It seems like every season, the 49ers' backfield doesn't shake out the way anyone expects it to, and 2021 was no exception. The fragile Raheem Mostert headed into the campaign atop the depth chart, but it was assumed the team had used a third-round pick on Trey Sermon to push him for touches. Mostert did indeed get hurt just four snaps into Week 1 and was sidelined for the rest of the season, but it was sixth-round selection Mitchell that got first crack at the starting role. The rookie made it his own, rushing for over 100 yards and a touchdown in three of his first six starts. The Louisiana product also missed two games during that stretch with a shoulder stinger, setting the tone for the rest of the season as Mitchell wound up missing six games in total to three separate injuries. Mitchell has some similarities to a former Kyle Shanahan back in Tevin Coleman, as both players possess plus speed and good size but lack elusiveness. Mitchell's lower pad level gives him a better ability to bounce off the first defender though, and his 2.5 yards after contact per carry ranked fifth in the league. He'll head into 2022 with essentially the same profile Mostert had last offseason as a big-play threat who might have trouble staying healthy, and facing competition from a rookie in third-round pick Ty Davis-Price. Maybe this is the year the San Francisco backfield does the completely unexpected thing and sticks with its initial depth chart. Read Past Outlooks

Opts for offseason knee procedure
Mitchell said Monday that he underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee following his rookie season, but he expects to be 100 percent in advance of training camp, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was a fixture on the 49ers' injury reports throughout the 2021 campaign, with a combination of the knee, shoulder and rib injuries as well as a concussion keeping him sidelined for six of San Francisco's 20 contests, including the postseason. The knee issue first popped up in early December, but Mitchell continued to fill a lead role out of the 49ers backfield when he was available for the final five games, as he amassed 373 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards and two scores over those contests. His efficiency took a big hit, however, as he averaged 4.6 yards per carry through his first nine contests, compared to only 3.8 yards per carry in his final five appearances. Mitchell is hopeful that the knee procedure along with adding some extra bulk -- he plans to play at around 215 pounds in 2022 after hovering around 212 as a rookie -- will allow him to recapture the success he enjoyed during the early portion of 2021.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
The 49ers selected Mitchell in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the late pick doesn't mean he can't have an immediate impact in the league. With a 5-10, 200-pound frame and 4.33 speed out of the backfield, the Louisiana product could carve out a specialty role for the 49ers (or another team if he doesn't make the cut).
