Rest-of-Season Projections

Opening season in minors
The Rays reassigned Hess to their minor-league camp Monday.
ANALYSIS
Before re-signing with the Rays on a minor-league deal in November, Hess revealed that he underwent chemotherapy earlier in the offseason to address a cancerous tumor in his chest. Fortunately, Hess received full medical clearance to resume his career in January and hasn't faced any restrictions upon reporting to spring training. He'll likely open the season at Triple-A Durham, but it's unclear if the Rays plan on having Hess serve as a starter or reliever.

2020 Fantasy Outlook
Hess spent a large portion of last season on the Orioles' big-league roster, starting 14 games and appearing out of the bullpen in nine more. He didn't come anywhere close to making a good impression, finishing with a 7.09 ERA in 80 innings of work. His 8.2% walk rate was a hair better than league average, but he struck out batters at just an 18.6% clip and couldn't keep the ball on the ground. His 32.6% groundball rate helped contribute to an awful 3.2 HR/9. A 23.5% HR/FB rate ordinarily suggests bad luck, but Hess' Statcast numbers indicated that he got what he deserved; his .397 xwOBA meant that the average opposing hitter turned into Juan Soto (.394 wOBA) against him. Hess could still receive a fair number of starts this season given the weakness of the Orioles' staff, but the gap between where he was and where he needs to be if he's to be a fantasy asset is far too large to consider drafting him.
